Mental Health Therapist

Welcome! My name is Laura (she/her) and I have over 8 years of experience working with people in need of mental health support and other life-giving resources like housing and food access. I operate from a place of compassion and curiosity, and the belief that every person is deserving of mental health care that is attuned to their unique story and cultural identities. The relationship formed between a client and counselor is incredibly unique and different from most others in our lives. As a relational therapist, I believe that connection is foundational to any successful healing, with the ingredients being empathy, autonomy, authenticity, and trust.

My counseling style integrates a trauma understanding with Attachment theory, Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Psychodynamics to identify adaptive strategies and patterns that many of us developed starting in early childhood due to various circumstances that have left us feeling fragmented and disconnected from our authentic Selves. I believe that language and stories are one of the most potent ways that we make meaning of this existence. Through my use of Narrative Therapy, I encourage clients to reflect on the stories they have about themselves, and who’s lenses they are viewing themselves through. These stories are often layered with dominant and oppressive influences that need editing and revision to more accurately reflect our own personal experience. I passionately believe that healing must include our bodies, and so I incorporate somatic and mindfulness approaches whenever appropriate. As a neurodivergent counselor, I have found great joy in incorporating creative ways to approach therapy that does not solely rely on talk therapy for expression.

When I am not wearing my counseling hat, I am outside saying hello to all of my plant friends, smothering my cat Pebbles with love, metalsmithing jewelry, swimming in cold waters, connecting with people I love, and eating all of the culinary delights that Portland has to offer.
